Swim and Fin Open Water Race: Fundraiser to Protect our Beaches, Protect our Watershed!

The event will be held on Sunday, July 31, 2022 at Noon to 3:30PM. The 500 Meter Open Water Race takes place at Forest River Park, Salem, MA. There will be ocean themed awards and prizes for different divisions.

5K Run for a Great Cause–Protect our Beaches, Protect our Watershed!

BEVERLY, MA – Carvalho & Associates, P.C. and Attorney Mike Carvalho are pleased to be a Platinum Sponsor of The Salem Sound Coastwatch 13th Annual Run for The Beach. The event will be held on Sunday, June 12, 2022 at 9AM. The race takes place at Dane Street Beach, at the intersection of Lothrop St. and Dane St., in Beverly, MA 01915.  View the 5K Race for the Beach route.

This fun 5K road race will be equipped with chip-timing provided by Bay State Race Services. There will be ocean themed awards and prizes for different divisions and even those of you run/walking with a stroller will be eligible for a prize!

This event is great for all ages.  Salem Sound Coastwatch will have an interactive pool tank to learn about eel grass and juveniles marine species that depend on eel grass for their habitat. Explore “Salt” a life-sized inflatable whale, which allows visitors of all abilities to walk through the interior and explore the internal organs. The Kayak Learning Center will be on site giving free demos to kids and adults. Pack a picnic or enjoy a hearty lunch after the race, as Butter “UR” Biscuit food truck will be onsite selling delicious Latin Soul Cuisine.

Michael P. Carvalho, Esq. Appointed to Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA Water Resources Protection Task Force

Environmental Attorney, Michael P. Carvalho, Esq., was unanimously appointed to serve as an At-Large Member of Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA Water Resources Protection Task Force at a recent meeting of the Board of Selectmen. The Board of Selectmen and Conservation Commission recently formed the new task force to focus on protecting critical water resources. The town is currently experiencing many environmental challenges, to include development pressures and climate change issues that threaten its drinking water and stormwater management.  “Our coastal community is at critical crossroads as we share the responsibility to balance protection of our water resources, while implementing State mandated development obligations.  It is always a privilege to serve the town and share my knowledge in decades of experience with these issues,” said Carvalho.

Attorney Carvalho currently serves as a Member of the Board of the Salem Sound Coastwatch, a Trustee of the Manchester-Essex Conservation Trust and Board Secretary of Citizens Initiative for Manchester Affordable Housing.  He is president of Carvalho & Associates, P.C., an environmental law firm with offices in Boston and Atlanta.  Mike lives in Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA with his wife and children. Michael Carvalho Joins Salem Sound Coastwatch Board

Manchester-By-The-Sea MA — A community environmental not-for-profit, Salem Sound Coastwatch (SSCW), has named environmental attorney and Manchester resident Michael P. Carvalho to its board of directors.

Founded in 1990 and based in Salem, SSCW’s mission is to protect and improve the environmental quality of Salem Sound and its watershed. SSCW’s efforts are focused on increasing the public’s knowledge and appreciation of the natural resources, as well as the immediate and chronic threats to the ecological health of the watershed. The organization works to foster responsible and sustainable resource management, conduct environmental monitoring and scientific research, and share the results with the public and science community.

“We are excited to have Mike join SSCW’s Board, where he brings enormous experience and perspective that will advance SSCW’s mission,” said Barbara Warren, SSCW executive director.

“SSCW’s longstanding commitment to promoting awareness and understanding of environmental stewardship plays a critical role in leading healthier sea and shore,” said Carvalho. “I am humbled to be part of that effort.”

Carvalho has been practicing environmental law for over 25 years, specializing in matters involving the federal Clean Water Act, Coastal Zone Management and Environmental Risk Management. He has successfully litigated claims in state and federal courts and provided environmental legal counsel in transactional and regulatory matters to a wide range of clients throughout the U.S. Carvalho is the past chair of the National Council for Science and the Environment, where he recently represented the United Nations Environment Program for North America before the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-4) in Nairobi, Kenya. In 2018, Carvalho participated in an expedition to Antarctica, studying the effects of climate change and environmental policy solutions to the challenges posed by this existential threat.
