WASHINGTON, D.C. – Environmental and energy attorney Michael P. Carvalho has been named to the Board of Directors of the Washington D.C. based National Council on Science and the Environment (NCSE).  NCSE is a prominent, not-for-profit organization dedicated to improving the scientific basis for environmental decision-making on critical environmental challenges.

Carvalho joins former Secretary of Energy Hazel O’Leary, former Governor and Ambassador Bill Richardson, retired Ambassador Richard Benedick, former head of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency William Ruckelshaus, in addition to distinguish deans and directors of prestigious universities and multi-national corporations on NCSE’s Board.

In 1998, Carvalho served as a Mentor in NCSE’s EnvironMentors Program where mentored inner city high school students interested in environmental matters while working as a Partner at a prominent Washington, D.C. law firm.  Since relocating to Georgia, he was named to the National EnvironMentors Advisory Board where he has served as General Counsel, and currently serves as Chair.  EnvironMentors is celebrating its 20th Anniversary as a premier national environmental-based mentoring program serving underrepresented students in science.  Nearly 100 percent of the “At-Risk” high school students who complete the EnvironMentors Program graduate from high school, and many of those go on to study science, technology, engineering and math in colleges and universities.  Currently, EnvironMentors has 12 Chapter Affiliates throughout the United States and has had over 1650 students complete its rigorous 8-month program.

Carvalho recently attended the EnvironMentors Program’s 20th Anniversary National Awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. where he was recognized for his contributions to the EnvironMentors Program.  “I have been blessed with great mentors in my life, and I am honored to be named to NCSE’s Board,” said Carvalho.  “I look forward to helping the EnvironMentors’ Program expand throughout the United States, and offer this great program to excite student interest in environmental science and policy,” he added.

In 2009, Carvalho was appointed as a Mentor for the State Bar of Georgia Transition Into Law Practice Program by the Supreme Court of the State of Georgia.  He also serves as a mentor to students enrolled in Wheeler High School’s Magnet Program through an internship program.

A successful environmental and energy attorney, Carvalho is the President of Carvalho & Associates, P.C. and is admitted to practice law in Michigan, the District of Columbia, Georgia and Massachusetts.  Carvalho regularly advises a range of clients on environmental and energy regulatory and transactional matters, and represents clients in litigation in state and federal courts.

Enironmentors is always looking for good mentors and the opportunity to grow the program.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Prominent local environmental attorney Michael Carvalho was honored for his two years of service as Chair the National Council on Science and the Environment’s (NCSE) EnvironMentors Program at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. on May 21, 2013.

EnvironMentors is a one to one mentoring program that pairs disadvantaged high students with environmental professionals as they pursue projects in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The EnvironMentors Program is a not-for-profit organization funded through multi-million dollar grants from the National Science Foundation, Toyota Foundation and Coca-Cola Foundation.  Under Mr. Carvalho’s leadership, the EnvironMentors Program has expanded to include 13 Chapters across the United States.

Since 1999, Mr. Carvalho has previously served as a Mentor, Member of the EnvironMentor’s National Advisory Board, and General Counsel.  He also serves as a member of the NCSE Board of Directors.  Mr. Carvalho represents a wide range of clients in environmental and energy matters, and is admitted to practice law in Georgia, Michigan, Massachusetts and Washington, D.C.

environmentors_postThe Environmentors Program was founded in 1992 as an environment-based mentoring program, EnvironMentors envisions young adult leaders from all cultural, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds becoming active stewards of their communities and the environment. By creating a bridge that encourages underserved youth to explore environmental education in college we open potential pathways for them to move toward successful environmental careers.

Over the course of the school year, students work with mentors to develop rigorous environmental science projects based on relevant environmental circumstances in their communities. Upon completion of their chosen research projects, they develop lesson plans and present to an elementary school class, at local science fairs, as well as at the annual EnvironMentors Science Fair where they have a chance to compete for college.

Currently, EnvironMentors has expanded to include thirteen chapters at: Alabama State University, Alabama A&M University, Arkansas State University, Colorado State University, Heritage University, Kean University, Kentucky State University, Louisiana State University, North Carolina State University, University of California, Davis, University of the District of Columbia, University of Nebraska, Lincoln, and West Virginia University. Enironmentors is always looking for good mentors and the opportunity to grow the program.
